Dear Parents,
Your children will be taking their quarterly assessments in Open Court Reading soon. This is the test we reviewed at your last parent conference. It is an important tool to track your child's progress meeting third grade standards.
The test covers reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, writing and fluency, We are reviewing finding the context meaning of words, synonyms, antonyms and multiple meaning words. Help them to prepare for the test at home by reviewing the language arts section of this website and have them read at home every night. Ask them what they are reading and choose words that look difficult in the reading. Ask them how they figured out their meanings.
The test also covers adjectives, contractions and verb tense. We are finishing up our stories for the imagination unit and reviewing for this test at the same time. They may bring their anthology books home for the next two weeks and I would like them to talk to you about the unit. Ask them if they know the query questions for imagination. These are questions that help us think further about a topic. If they can't remember remind them that there is a thinking map brown poster in the classroom the the three components of imagination.
You cannot imagine the difference you are making in your child's life by getting involved in his or her education. When you show an interest in what they are learning they are more excited to come to school to learn. This year's class is very excited to learn and some kids have written on their pencil boxes, "I love school" and "learning is fun!" They were not told to write these things. You have helped create a positive learning school atmosphere and I cannot thank you enough.
If you have any questions about the test you may contact me at school.
Thank you for visiting! And I will you see you in class!
Sincerely,
Mr. Edwards

Our class scored a 78% test average this quarter in math. This is very good for a class average. They are so motivated to score over 80% for a pizza party next quarter that when I asked them their goal for their class test score average they told me they want a 100%. I am so proud of their positive attitude!
