News & Updates

Classroom Links

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! Your children have written papers about their New Year's Resolutions which are posted in our classroom. Most students want to learn more in school this year. This is awesome! I love the motivation and positive attitude I am observing in this second grade class!

I am our school's coordinator for the "Read To Succeed Program", sponsored by Six Flags. Review the information under the "News & Updates" section of this page. You can print out the reading log form there (each student already received a copy in school) and read the parent letter that explains everything. I will accept reading log forms from any of your children (Kindergarten through 6th grade). They too can earn a free ticket to Six Flags and then your family can save even more money if you chose to go:) If you have other children encourage them to participate. I am happy to mail in their form so you and your family can enjoy a fun free day at Six Flags!

Sincerely,

Mr. Edwards

We made it into the library today! Hip hip hooray!!! Your children were so excited to be the first class to use the library. (except for the 5th grade pilot group) All Harvard students are only allowed to take out one book at a time. We will be going to the library on a weekly basis. They are allowed to take the books home but I am discouraging it. If a book is missing the family must pay for the cost of the book's new value. If a book is badly damaged the family may be responsible to pay as well. (We know that some of the books are old.)

Don't forget to log the hours of the Six Flag's reading log when you see your child reading. I have seen a huge improvement in the focus of sustained silent reading in the class!

Please do not fill out a time longer than 20 minutes on the form unless you see me briefly. I suspect there may be one or two students who have a long attention span but let's take this reward program seriously. It is a huge reward to a child.

I decided to participate in the Read to Succeed program sponsored by Six Flags. Your child must read 360 minutes of recreational reading. Books, magazines and newspapers all count. As they read they fill out a reading log and you initial as they read. Once they have completed the log it is to be turned in to me at school by February 20, 2012. Once they have done this I mail it in to the program and they send your child a completely free ticket to Six Flags Magic Mountain!

Reading Log : Be sure to fill out the reading log to get credit for your reading hours!

I love teaching second grade math because it is so useful! What your students learn can be used in everyday life. One difficulty a few students have been having is mental math. It is simple for them to count by tens. Example 10,20,30,40,50, etc. Counting by tens starting with a number such as 14 proves more challenging for them. Example; 14, 24, 34, 44, 54, 64, 74, 84, 94, 104, 114, 124, 134,etc. It is so much fun to see a child's face light up when they see the pattern! All of a sudden math is fun and easy! :)

Here are some math problems I made up based on a previous topic:

(updated)

___ + 48 = 100

___ + 86 = 100

61 + ___ = 100

89 + ____ = 100

Your child should be able to do this quickly without pencil and paper using mental math. Go ahead and test them at home if you like! If there are any problems please let me know!

16 pigs and 3 hens are in a pen. 8 pigs are in the barn. How many pigs are there altogether?

Encourage your child at home to push themselves to get 100% on everything they do!

In the new California Treasures reading program your children are reading anthologies which are all related to creations.  Unit 3 is entitled, "Let's Create." Encourage your child to bring in realia from home to post on our Treasures bulletin board.  We can enjoy looking at them every day!.

Students recently completed some cool artwork related to Unit 3. Check it out on our Treasures bulletin board in the classroom.

Spelling counts on your tests.  Something to remember:

A diphthong, also known as a gliding vowel, refers to two adjacent vowel sounds occurring within the same syllable. Here are some examples:

 hOUse    destrOY    hOIst

mOUse   dislOYal    pOInt

dOUbt     rOYal        vOIce

Suggested minimum supplies list:

  • spiral notebook
  • 2 sharpened pencils
  • red correcting pen
  • individual pencil sharpener
  • a focused mind! :)

Have your child show you their math program by logging on to Pearson Math !  Don't have a computer at home?
Public libraries have many computers for your use as does our school!  What a fun activity to take a trip to the library or our classroom!
